THE male-dominated resources sector is being encouraged to be more proactive in tackling the issue of prostate cancer – with a leading national industry association joining with the Prostate Cancer Foundation this week to encourage the delivery of this message to mine sites across the country.

The Australian Mines and Metals Association [AREEA] announced their ongoing support and partnership with the Foundation at a Conference in Perth this week.

AREEA Chief Executive, Steve Knott, said the initiative was designed to not only help raise awareness of the issue, but also help fund vital research into the disease.

“Research into the cause, diagnosis and treatment of this killer disease is vitally important, as is the need to provide information and support to those affected,”

“Close to 3,300 men die of prostate cancer in Australia each year – and as such it is the most common cancer in Australian men.” Mr Knott said.

“Yet it is not a disease which is commonly talked about or discussed. We hope our ongoing support of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, and our contribution of $10,000 today will help reverse this trend and help towards the objective of delivering the message to where it is most needed.” he said.

AREEA is also encouraging it’s member companies to participate in the site outreach program.

“On-site education and awareness initiatives are vital in getting the message out to our highly valued employees – particularly those who work in distant and remote locations.” Mr Knott said.
