Sarah Wells is a Senior Technical Services Manager at Thiess’ Mt Pleasant Operations in the NSW Hunter Valley and a proud Biripi woman from the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales. In her current role, Wells oversees engineers, geologists and surveyors, ensuring operational plans are delivered safely, efficiently and in alignment with both client and organisational expectations. She is known for her collaborative leadership style, her focus on mentoring emerging professionals, and her ability to balance technical rigour with practical, on-site delivery.

Wells holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) focused in Geological and Earth Sciences/Geosciences from University of Newcastle and a postgraduate qualification in Mining Engineering. Her pathway into the resources sector was shaped early by an interest in environmental science, with a trip to the geologically fascinating landscape that is New Zealand cementing her desire for a career in mining and minerals. Growing up with a father who worked in a coal handling and preparation plant also provided her with a strong appreciation for the industry.

Beyond operational leadership, Wells is a strong advocate for inclusion and reconciliation within the resources sector. She has actively engaged in Thiess’ Indigenous initiatives and is a vocal supporter of meaningful action through reconciliation frameworks, cultural learning and supplier diversity.

As a contemporary trailblazer, Sarah Wells represents the growing presence of Indigenous women in mining.  Her impact lies not only in technical excellence, but in fostering environments where people feel heard, valued and empowered to contribute to a more inclusive and resilient industry.
