Resources employers to work with Albanese Ministry on industry prosperity

Resources and energy employers look forward to working with members of the Albanese Ministry on securing investment, creating jobs and ultimately building a stronger and more prosperous nation.

“The Australian Resources and Energy Employer Association congratulates members of the new Albanese Ministry,” said AREEA Chief Executive Steve Knott AM.

“All Ministers and Assistant Ministers will play a vital role in overcoming the economic and productivity challenges facing our nation over the next term of Parliament and leveraging the comparatively strong position of Australian industries for the good of all its citizens.”

While AREEA will engage all members of the new frontbench, the following ministers hold portfolios particularly critical to the ongoing growth and prosperity of the resources and energy industry:

  • The Hon. Madeleine King MP, Minister for Resources and Northern Australia

Minister King is now the steward of an industry delivering a record $425 billion in commodity export earnings to the nation, as well as $45 billion in annual royalty and company tax payments. The industry faces a raft of new challenges and opportunities in coming years that AREEA will seek to tackle head-on with Minister King.

  • The Hon. Tony Burke MP, Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations

Resources and energy employers continue to face crippling skills shortages of unprecedented levels. This presents a very significant threat to the industry’s growth in the short to medium term.

Further, as detailed in correspondence to Mr Burke prior to the election, there is a significant opportunity for improvements to the industrial relations framework that will foster increased major project investment, create many thousands of new jobs, and put upwards pressure on wages across the economy.

  • The Hon. Brendan O’Connor MP, Minister for Skills and Training

Minister O’Connor is highly experienced in employment and workforce matters suiting him very well for his new portfolio. His work will be critical to solving the aforementioned skills crisis, introducing new workers to the resources industry and upskilling its existing workforce.

“AREEA would welcome involvement in the forthcoming Employment Summit in which solutions will be sought to many of the big challenges facing the resources industry and business more broadly. This includes labour supply, upskilling, productivity and workplace relations matters,” Mr Knott said.

AREEA also recognises Ministers Chris Bowen (Climate Change and Energy), Tanya Plibersek (Environment and Water), Ed Husic (Industry and Science) and Don Farrell (Trade), amongst others, as holding responsibilities vital to the future of Australia’s resources and energy industry.
