Federal leader of the Opposition Anthony Albanese last week unveiled the latest shadow cabinet reshuffle, overhauling responsibility for key areas such as employment, resources and industry.
WA’s Madeleine King takes on resources portfolio
West Australian Madeleine King (pictured) was appointed Labor’s Shadow Minister for Resources, in addition to her role as Shadow Minister for Trade.
Commenting on her appointment, Ms King said Labor “supports our world-leading resources sector because it creates jobs, economic growth and export revenue for Australia”.
“As a Western Australian, I understand the crucial role the industry plays in the nation’s economic wellbeing and the importance of mining to regional communities right around the country,” she said.
“I have seen first-hand the massive wealth-generating projects in the state’s north that support regional communities.”
“And as the Member for Brand, I know how important the resources industry is to thousands of families that depend on fly-in fly-out shifts that are gruelling for the family staying home and the worker who goes away.”
Ms King said she was also looking forward to working with Senator Murray Watt (pictured) in his new role as Shadow Minister for Queensland Resources.
Mr Watt’s appointment adds to his roles as Shadow Minister for Northern Australia, and Shadow Minister for Disaster and Emergency Management.
“I’ve spent a lot of time in Queensland mines, from Moranbah to Mt Isa, and worked with mining unions, workers and communities to ensure they are treated fairly,” Mr Watt said.
“I’m now keen to build on my past work, as a champion for one of our state’s most important industries and the hardworking people who drive it.
“As I’ve said before, our coal, gas and other resource industries have a strong future and we should treasure every job they produce.”
New shadow appointment for ’employment’
Deputy Leader of the Opposition Richard Marles, who was Shadow Minister for Defence for close to five years, now has a new shadow portfolio; National Reconstruction, Employment, Skills And Small Business and Science.
